This post is actually a bit late as we visited Xanthi over 2 months ago, unfortunately we didn’t have time to post this before leaving overseas so it’s been in draft for a while now π Forgive me if I forget some of the dishes because it’s been quite a while but I’ll do my best to recall!
Xanthi is a new recipient of a chefs hat award (just one). The restaurant was opened by the chef of Perama (now closed) in 2011 and achieved many awards in the 1-2 years they have been open which is great.
Our first entree was the Barbecued Haloumi (above) and accompanied by tomato and fig, definitely a winner with great taste and a chewy texture. Miss K especially loved this as she’s always been a fan of Fetta and Haloumi.
This was the dish which originally caught my eye, many other diners consider this a signature dish so we decided to order this. I have to admit the name made me curious to see if he could successfully make a salty and sweet dish combined actually taste good. The pork belly tasted tender and had a good layer of sweet date sauce and surprisingly enough was actually worth a second serving if I had the stomach for it, the flavours went well together and weren’t too overpowering.
When I saw this on the menu I had to order it – I can’t say it was overly special but it had the perfect combination of ingredients Miss K and I love so we ordered it and didn’t regret it!
I loved that many of the dishes at Xanthi were for sharing (in true Greek fashion!). The mousaka was actually our main for the night and was also the largest serving, it was stuffed with Potato, Mushrooms and Eggplant with a lot of bechamel sauce to make it creamy and cheesy. Overall I definitely enjoyed this dish but I have to warn you all that it’s actually a lot larger than it looks and very filling!
Nothing too special, I wasn’t a big fan of this salad as it was filled with cucumber and apple but the dressing was okay π We were too full to actually finish this in the end.
With a lack of ‘exceptional’ greek restaurants in Sydney I have to say that Xanthi definitely makes up for it with a great selection of unique dishes. Definitely give it a go for some an interesting experience, the prices are reasonable and servings are generous. I would definitely like to return as there is much more on the menu which looked appealing but I didn’t have the chance to try.
