Whitewater, Manly

Thanks to DK at Excuse Me Waiter I had the pleasure of visiting Whitewater restaurant in Manly just last week for a group lunch. The restaurant is situated at the end of the corso right in front of Manly beach and serves up a mixed Modern Australian menu with plenty of seafood.

Grilled lobster w/ lemon butter sauce, chips and garden salad

When I saw that the menu had a lobster dish I knew that I had to order it. As expected the lobster itself was a bit small in portion but it sure was delicious. I also really enjoyed the lemon butter sauce, it’s a great sauce for lobster but also works really well with the chips served on the side.

Five Spiced squid w/ fried noodles, chives, baby radish, shallots, fried chilli, lemon and lime aioli

It’s rare that I’ll visit a seafood restaurant and not order some form of squid, whether it be prepared deep fried or otherwise. The tasty fried squid served at Whitewater has an interesting Asian influence (five spiced squid!?) and is served with soy sauce and aioli on the sauce.

Roasted Chinese duck w/ house made pancakes, shallots, cucumber and plum hoi sin sauce

I have to admit this was an odd item on the menu, it seemed a little out place. I definitely am not complaining though since I always love a good peking duck and this was no different.

Pork and beef ribs, slow braised, char grilled and served with steakhouse chips

The double rib combo was definitely a crowd pleaser, delicious pieces of pork and beef ribs smothered in a nice tangy marinate and served with thick crispy chips. These disappeared pretty quickly but that really just goes to show how good they really were.

Fish and chips – fresh tempura fish w/ homemade tartare sauce and garnish salad

The fish and chips turned out to be quite a large serving and was literally falling off the plate as it arrived. The taste of fish and chips is pretty hard to differentiate in most cases but this particular one was served very crispy which is how I (and hopefully most people) enjoy fish and chips.

40 Degree Ocean trout w/ watercress salad and horseradish mayo

I personally wasn’t a big fan of the trout, though I’m not generally a fan of fish prepared this way. The salad was good but I don’t enjoy horseradish so I avoided this dish in general.

Steamed broccolini w/ roasted garlic butter

Mushrooms and baby onions seasoned and grilled on a skewer

There are actually quite a few interesting sides on the menu. I love broccolini and mushrooms so these were both ordered by myself, mushrooms and lemon butter sauce are a heavenly combination.

Affogato Plain

Spicy Lychee

Coco-Mango Daiquiri

I love a nice affogato so I decided to go with the plain affogato as a dessert to finish off the meal. There’s also a great selection of cocktails, wines and other alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks on the menu.

I’d have to say that I enjoyed the lunch, the venue is great for groups and the interiors are quite nice. The food didn’t blow me away by any means but it’s unpretentious and straightforward which is actually a nice change once in a while, though of course you pay a premium for the location!
