Bar Chinois, Chippendale

Bar Chinois is the first Chinese and French infused bar tot open up in Sydney, it’s got a great concept behind it revolving around ‘east meets west’. As always I’m all for the food items on the menu even when it’s a bar so I was excited to hear that the food here also takes the European and Asian fusion to heart.

Beef tartare with eshallot, nam jim, horseradish, toasted rice, Dijon mustard, baguette

The beef tartare was easily one of my favourite dishes. The beef is smothered with a creamy nam jim sauce and tastes of a hint of horseradish, it’s also accompanied with crispy baguette slices and some great sides.

We actually decided to let the kitchen surprise us with some of their more popular dishes that they recommend, I wouldn’t have thought to order the filo wontons myself so I’m glad we went with that option. The gruyere cheese based dish is very fragrant, flavourful and moreish.

Although we were dining at night, the kitchen whipped up some of their popular lunch menu items including the popcorn chicken salad – very delicious crispy slices of fried chicken and greens to accompany it. The bar itself has different menus designed specifically for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I can’t ever turn down pork belly dishes, especially when they have a delicious crispy crackling. The combination of heavy pork belly with a lighter daikon and vegetable based side salad worked quite well.

We decided to close off the meal with a nice and simple chocolate crepe. Very soft and very rich.

Bar Chinois is certainly a bar at heart and that means they serve up a great selection of drinks. The cocktail menu has a number of interesting fusion cocktails to pick from, my favourite of the lot was definitely the coco chanel which was a very light and refreshing drink to start the evening.

I’ve always been following all the news and development around Central Park and Kensington Street. It’s great to see the area becoming a great nightlife district with good eats and great bars like Bar Chinois. Overall we found Bar Chinois to be quite a cosy venue with delicious food and drinks on offer.
