Cafe Mint, Surry Hills

Cafe Mint located on Crown Street in Surry Hills has been on the food scene for a long time offering great Middle Eastern inspired cafe food. After a long period of time where I hadn’t visited, I was delighted to hear that they were now open later in the evening and offering dinner with an amazing looking menu to boot.

House-made dip, veges & bread – hummus, baba ganouj, muhammara

Seared scallops – basturmia, sweet potato and tahini tartare

Charred eggplant – cherry tomato & almond salad, green tahini dressing

We kicked off our huge banquet of food with a mix of house made dips, a scallop dish and a charred eggplant dish. It was quite a hard choice given the extensive list of items on the menu. I personally found the scallops topped with air dried beef as my favourite entree item, the serving size is also quite generous so you’re provided with plenty of scallops to share.

Whiting fillet – ras el hanout & chickpea flour, chackchouka and feta

My dining partner for the evening who is gluten free decided to go with a fish based main, the dish is composed of a number of tender whiting fillets doused in the same tomato based sauce used for chackchouka (baked eggs) and finally garnished with a number of aromatic green herbs.

Lobster and crab ravioli with seared scallops and champagne sauce

We were already ordering a load of seafood based dishes but when the lobster and crab ravioli was listed as one of the specials for the evening I really couldn’t say no. The dish was definitely the highlight of the meal, how can you go wrong with such a perfect combination of seafood smothered in a creamy sauce?

Dessert tasting plate – chocolate filo cigar, chocolate brownie, almond pavlova, tiramisu

The dessert tasting plate to finish off the meal came with a multitude of sugary treats. Although I quite enjoyed all the different desserts I couldn’t help but finish the tiramisu ahead of all the others.

Moroccan sangria – elderflower, orange blossom, fresh mint and fruit

Coconut and pomegrate mojitos

Everyone who knows me well knows that I love a good cocktail and Mint Cafe had delicious cocktails like the Moroccan sangria I just couldn’t resist. My personal favourite was definitely the refreshing coconut mojito.

The main section of the cafe and restaurant is actually quite a small space but it’s a nice venue with a relaxed vibe and great staff, for those with larger groups or functions there’s also the upstairs function space on level two. I quite enjoyed the food here and I’ll definitely look to head back here for the day menu.
