Mary’s, Newtown
Number 6 Mary Street is home to an interesting cross between a bar and an American diner named Mary’s (I wonder where the name came from :)). It’s tucked away in an old building which a pile of other bloggers have mentioned has a lot of history behind it, the entrance itself has no signage that gives away what’s inside which I guess brings some sort of intrigue to people walking past.
We went for lunch on a Saturday when they open from 12pm, Mr C wanted to avoid the crowds and have a more relaxing lunch and we were lucky because there weren’t too many people aside from the few odd tables there for lunch and light music which wasn’t too loud.
As you can see in the delicious thumbnail above, we ordered the Fried Chicken (Half Bird) because we were craving something greasy and delicious (so unhealthy). The chicken was amazingly good, I love the spiciness to it and also how it was fried just crispy enough to have a crunch but not overly cooked or dripping oil.
Usually when I have fried chicken I love to dip it in gravy and mash, Mary’s makes what is quite possibly the best mash potato and gravy I’ve had in years. The sauce wasn’t overpowering but more creamy and subtle in texture, it went perfect when mixed with the mashed potato which was just as creamy and delicious.
When I first looked at the menu I was kind of surprised that there were so little things on the menu and was happy it wouldn’t be too hard to decide what to order. I was so wrong because there were three amazing burgers to pick from including the Cheeseburger, Mary’s Burger and Shroom Burger. I almost ordered the Shroom burger but decided to leave that for next time because I’d heard a lot of good things about the Cheeseburger and I wasn’t disappointed because it was amazingly good with the perfect mix of sauces, patty and bun. The fries that went with them were golden crispy and went perfect with some Tabasco sauce.
I love the interiors with seated tables on the top level and a bar area at the bottom, they’ve got a nice and efficient design with natural sky lighting during the day.
Considering the hype that Mary’s has had over the past few weeks I wasn’t sure it was going to live up to my expectations. Now that I’ve visited the only thing I can think of is when I’m going to revisit for some more comfort food 😀 Most menu items are around $14 and sides are around $5.
