Petaling Street, Haymarket
Mr C and I have walked past Petaling Street numerous times but never had the chance to actually dine in because we keep forgetting. After having cravings for Malaysian food for a while, we agreed to give this place a go just to see if it was any good. I remember looking at the outside menu before to see if they had Bak Kut Teh as I really wanted to re-experience our Singapore trip but wasn’t able to find it. This time we looked at the menu and finally saw it, located in the rice section where we didn’t bother looking!
The photo above is of the Char Kway Teow and wow, one of the spiciest ones we’ve ever had. It was so spicy, yet delicious at the same time that we both powered through the hotness to finish the dish, thankfully the crushed ice and the coconut drink we ordered saved us. I really enjoyed the dish even though it was not as authentic as I thought it would be, the addictive taste managed to keep me eating.
Bak Kut Teh with Rice
The dish I’ve been craving since my Singapore trip, Bak Kut Teh, also known as Pork Bone Tea. My first instinct was to drink the soup to see if it would be similar to Singapore and although not identical and cooked with different herbs, the soup was still delicious and had that peppery tea flavour. There was also a lot of miscellaneous ingredients here such as lettuce, beancurd tofu, mushrooms, pork bones with meat, and the little red seed-like things that I’ve had at home and in other soups. It was a great serving for a great price at around $12, I found myself drinking the soup more and eating the vegetables though as the pork itself was quite tough.
Iced Coconut
That day (or perhaps everyday), I was also craving a coconut drink and was super glad to know Petaling Street also served this as I expected. I was very happy to see the coconut pieces especially being served in a large glass. It is definitely worth the money and hydrates you up on a hot spring day along with the crushed ice and in this case also saved us from the extremely hot chilli dish.
My overall first impressions of Petaling Street are quite good, they have a massive menu with many traditional Malaysian and Singaporean dishes available to choose from. The food we had was quite decent and served efficiently and cheaply. I will come back more often just to satisfy my Bak Kut Teh cravings though as it’s the only place I’ve found in Sydney that has it on the menu 🙂
