The Powder Keg, Potts Point

The Powder Keg is a small restaurant and bar located in Potts Point just a few minutes walk from Kings Cross station. The venue is situated within a charming old terrace house converted into a beautiful restaurant and bar which is quite popular and busy even on weekday nights.

Duck schnitzel lolipops w/ pickled kohlrabi, tarragon mayo

When I saw that the menu had duck scniztel lollipops I was curious and had to order them just to see what they were – of course the name really speaks for itself. I’m a huge fan of kohlrabi so that combined with the creamy tarragon mayo base made it a winner.

Oysters w/ Gin + tonic sorbet

As you’re all likely aware – I’m not a big fan of oysters but I have to say the presentation was quite nice!

Quail Scotch egg w/ smoked potato, crispy pancetta, mushrooms

Quail scotch eggs are something different and quite unique, I loved the smoked potato mash base with flavoursome mushrooms. The presentation with this dish is again spot on.

Mushroom risotto w/ truffle

I can’t seem to find this on the regular menu but if I recall correctly it was a special dish, the mushroom risotto was very flavoursome with a strong mushroom aroma and delicious broth. The truffles were actually hand picked by the head chef Elijah Holland (@chefelijahholland) on a weekend trip away, a very nice touch and it’s refreshing to see a chef so involved with and passionate about his food.

Short Rib w/ smoked bone marrow

Turnips and potatoes

The short rib was absolutely delicious and tender with a generous amount of delicious marinade, I also loved the side of turnips and potatoes which came out with it as a side and were quite nice.

Chocolate, persimmons, salted caramel

You can never really go wrong with chocolate and salted caramel based desserts. This dish was the first time I’ve seen persimmon used in a restaurant setting and I quite enjoyed it as I’d not had a piece in years.

Monsterio Delicio w/ elderflower, gin curd, macadamias

The monsterio delicio is an odd fruit indeed and one that isn’t used much in Australia (if at all). Elijah again shows that he’s very passionate about food and cooking by trying a fruit that’s different and created a whole new taste similar but not quite the same as a custard apple.

It’s almost difficult to tell if the venue is supposed to be a restaurant or a bar, the line blurs in the middle with mixed seating. The food is absolutely delicious but I have to give props to the bar as the drinks selection and cocktails is impressive. The ‘girls night out’ cocktail above is a unique one for the girls, it consists of a champagne filled bottle and ‘lipstick’ which was actually more of a popsicle.

Overall a great little venue for a quiet catch up at the bar or the restaurant up at the front. The food served at The Powder Keg is excellent and the drinks are inventive, it’s not hard to see why it’s such a popular place every day of the week. Make a booking and definitely pop in to check it out!
