Osaka Bar, Potts Point

Kings Cross and Potts Point is continuing to prove that it’s one of the places to be in Sydney for food and nightlife. Just moments away from Kings Cross station is the recently opened Osaka Bar, a unique little eatery run by Chef Kazu from Osaka with a focus on cuisine from the western region of Japan. The most apt way to describe the food here would be to call it Japanese soul food or comfort food.

Meatballs

Chicken Karaage

Assorted Sushi

As part of the formal launch event we were treated to a variety of traditional Japanese dishes including edamame, chicken karaage and assorted sushi as well as three cooking demonstrations of the most famous Kansai style dishes – Takoyaki, Kushi-Katsu and Okonomiyaki.

Takoyaki

One of the most famous dishes to come out of the Kansai region would definitely have to be takoyaki, better known as ‘octopus balls’. These are found all over the place in Osaka, they may look simple to make but a demonstration proved the intricacy and multitude of steps it takes to create these amazing little snacks.

Kushi-Katsu

Osaka Bar is on it’s way to becoming a successful venue, it’s impossible to go wrong with fried foods and a variety of Japanese beer. The kushi-katsu is served piping hot and comes with an amazing dipping sauce.

Okonomiyaki

Okonomiyaki is one of my all time favourite dishes, a delicious pancake-like dish made from a starchy mixture as well as vegetables and seafood. The dressing and sauces used on top are the same as those from takoyaki which gives it a similar delicious unique taste.

I’m very happy to see a place like this finally open in Sydney. Although we have bits and pieces of Osaka/Kansai style cuisine in Sydney the food is often not made fresh like it is here. The dishes are delicious and as good as I remember when I was in Japan. All the best to Chef Kazu.
