The Carrington, Surry Hills

The Carrington is a cosy and popular pub located on Bourke Street in Surry Hills. The pub has had a long and colourful history stretching back to 1877 and is located in a heritage listed building , it recently relaunched with a makeover and is now a family and dog friendly pub specialising in steak and wine.

The Ploughgirl’s Platter – oven-baked cheese, portobello mushroom, onion jam, piccalilli, bread

We were quite hungry before arriving so we quickly got the food sorted. I quite enjoyed this entree platter simply because of the combination of warm oven baked cheese and roasted portobello mushrooms. Lavosh and warm baked cheese is a crowd pleaser and such a delicious comfort food.

The sausage rolls were the other entree that we decided to go with. I have to admit I couldn’t really taste any of the apple cider but the sausage rolls were flavoursome and the outer shell was quite crispy.

I noticed that The Carrington seems to place emphasis on their steaks so that’s what we decided to go with for the mains. The sirloin on the bone was quite a delicious cut of tender meat whereas the hanger steak was slightly more dry, both cuts were cooked perfectly medium rare and rubbed with salt and pepper.

The pub stretches across three distinct areas, each with their own character and atmosphere. We dined in the bright internal garden bar which is quite open and as the night went on, it quickly filled with hungry families and couples out for a lazy weeknight feed.

The main bar at the front keeps its old historical character and hasn’t changed too much, it has however been restored as part the recent renovation. The poke in between both areas is an intimate venue with candles and leather lined benches for a more quiet meal.
