Ceru, Potts Point

Ceru is a brand new Levantine inspired restaurant located in Potts Point and is the latest venture by executive chef Tom Kime who first launched the Ceru London popup back in 2014. Ceru London has garnered enough success that they’re now looking for a permanent location to settle down in, whilst also opening a second location here in Sydney where Tom is now primarily based.

Slow roasted lamb shoulder – shawarma spices, pomegranate, mint, pistachio dressing

The food is all about sharing here, accessibility in price and abundant share plates are exactly what you get from Ceru. The slow roasted lamb shoulder was probably the highlight of the meal for us, the lamb simply melts in your mouth and is covered in a delicious dressing with spices to give it some added flavour.

Some of the share plates are perfect crowd pleasers and the menu is large enough that you’re bound to find something that you will love. The chicken skewers melts in your mouth, the squid is extra crispy (the harissa yoghurt dressing is delish) and the red pepper paste is a tasty dip to dive at with the bread.

The menu also has plenty of more healthier items on the menu for those looking for a light meal or to lessen the calories. I was recommended the roast duck salad and for good reason too, the duck is just so tender and the butternut squash is soft and delicious.

As a lover of tuna, especially served lightly seared, this dish was simply heavenly. The tuna is covered in chermoula and lightly seared before being served with a side of fennel salad and tasty roasted red peppers.

I was already getting full by the end of the meal when these two dishes arrived, fortunately I was able to try a few bites of each and definitely enjoyed them. The haloumi is as tasty as expected but the lamb meatballs were a little bit more unique with the cucumber yoghurt sauce and flavoursome cranberry sauce.

We originally misread this dish to be a baklava but I was pleasantly surprised to find it was actually an ice cream dish (I love ice cream!), consider it a type of deconstructed baklava in ice cream form.

The Turkish rice putting easily stole the show, I’ve never had anything quite like it before and the smooth milky dish possesses a unique subtle taste with hints of the various different ingredients and a bit of sweetness. The lemon pot was a nice dessert too but definitely overshadowed by the pudding.

The venue is brand new and located right next to Kings Cross station making it very easy to get to. The service is great with an abundant number of staff on hand. Make sure you check the place out, and make sure you bring a big enough group so that you get to try all the different dishes on the menu!
