Spanish restaurants are abundant in Sydney, one of the lesser known restaurants is Subsolo located in the heart of the CBD right next to Westfield Sydney. It’s been quite a while I’ve had any Spanish tapas so I decided to have a catch-up with my high school friend and since she is particularly fond of Spanish food and worked in the city we picked this restaurant for our catchup.

Sauteed Garlic Mushrooms with Haloumi and Spinach

The first dish to arrive was the plate of mushrooms, and needless to say it was amazing. I loved the texture of the haloumi as well, it wasn’t too soft nor tough so it was perfect. I’ve always had a longing for mushrooms to be served with spinach so this was pretty much

Jamon Serrano

I personally enjoy jamon more than prosciutto and this dish was no different, it has slightly more saltiness to it whereas prosciutto always seems more plain. Jamon also has a very smooth texture that makes it easy to eat as a snack, when we were in Barcelona we noticed that they actually sell it in cones! 🙂

Patatas Bravas

The highlight of the meal – patatas bravas. The potatos were soft yet cruncy on the outside, covered with the amazing spicy salsa. It is very filling but I would rather eat this while it’s still hot because that’s when it’s best! If there was to be a contender for best classic tapas this would be my next choice after the mushrooms.

Spanish Meatballs on Romesco with Cheese

These were cute little (well, big) meatballs – the moment you take a bite you’ll feel and taste the explosion of manchego cheese which is made from sheep’s milk. The meatballs were very flavoursome with a hint of spiciness, I would have enjoyed it more if the meatballs were more tender as these were quite chunky.

Pork Belly with Chorizo – 350gm Espetada Skewer

We had to spoil ourselves after a week of exhausting work, so therefore…. pork belly and chorizo! It was served on a hanging skewer with a heap of glaze and when it was first served it was dripping in very mouth watering looking juices. The pork belly was not overcooked to the point it was tough and the chorizo was as flavoursome as expected from the my favourite type of sausage in the world.

Chips & Salad

This side accompanied the pork belly and chorizo, the fries were quite filling especially since we had the patatas bravas but the salad was a nice break from all the meat we were having!

Alhambra Especial

I actually forgot to mention Mr C was tagging along as a third wheeler, he stayed kind quiet during the night but piped up to order a beer for himself which he seemed to enjoy 🙂

Overall I was quite happy with Subsolo, the prices reflect a more corporate oriented establishment but the food was good and is definitely above some of the Spanish restaurants found in the CBD. Worth a visit if you’re a big fan of Spanish food but if you’re looking for something more classy check out Bodega or Movida.
